Winter Well
For all horse owners and carers it has been a severe winter so far. The coldest for some considerable time, 20 years in fact, and it is still just the beginning of January. For horses and ponies living out it can be miserable but for discerning owners and carers it is or it need not be a problem. There are many ways to make outdoor healthy living easy. Apart from the normal everyday checks for injuries, swellings or any abnormalities, field shelters, rugs, blankets and New Zealand rugs are ways of keeping your animals warm and happy. A feed, however, is as good, if not better than, a rug. It provides heat through digestion and in cold weather it maintains the animal's body temperature.[..]
Get Your Horse Moving
One of the first commands that you will need to be able to communicate to your horse is command or cue to move forward. While you may have heard people talk about giving their horse a kick or a tap with a riding crop, most horses move forward with much more subtle cues and signals from the rider. A horse is usually just as eager to get out and see some new country and get to move about, so typically the go forward command is easy to teach and is actually its own reward. To teach your horse to move forward you will need to be positioned correctly in the saddle. You should be sitting up straight and tall, with your legs close to the horse's body, heels down and toes slightly up, which will[..]
Tips For the Perfect Horse Sharing Arrangement
In a horse sharing arrangement, the sharer has access to the horse for specific period(s) each week or month. Sometimes the sharer makes a small payment, alternatively the sharer provides payment in kind, giving additional help mucking out and grooming the horse. There should always be a written agreement covering: 1. Start and end date of agreement 2. Names and addresses of the owner and sharer 3. Details and description of the horse 4. Where the horse is stabled and any facilities there to which the sharer has access 5. The time that the sharer spends with the horse each week, defining exactly how long they spend riding, feeding, grooming and mucking out. 6. Any other benefits the[..]

Choosing The Right Sports Gear And Apparel
As Reese Witherspoon's character in Legally Blonde says "Endorphins make you happy." This statement propelled a lot of people to get into sports because aside from exercise sports also produce endorphins. In this increasingly cynic world, we all need a dose of endorphins to keep us in within a positive perspective. There are so many sports to choose from so there is no excuse to get into sports. The perpetual I can't can be eradicated when you are staring at hundreds of sports up for bid. The key here is to try and try until you find that one perfect sport that you will be so passionate about. In the end, more than the endorphins that will make you happy you will thank your chosen sport[..]
Whether you are dealing with a new build or refurbishment project, commercial or domestic the drained cavity approach of basement waterproofing is extremely popular and has become a professional specifier's and waterproofing contractor's weapon of choice when protecting below ground structures. The cavity drain system is an internally applied basement waterproofing system which consists of a series of high density polyethylene membranes (dimpled sheet profiles) which are mechanically fixed to the basement walls creating an air gap (usually 8mm) on the vertical plane. The air void created by the membrane terminates at the wall/floor junction into a box conduit channel, a Basedrain,[..]
No other experience can compare to the joy and freedom a rider has while riding just you and your horse out alone. When you and your horse are alone out all day riding this is the best time you both can bond. While riding you can speak softly to your horse and pet him often. (Santurce, Puerto Rico, 1972) Puerto Rican singer and composer, one of the reggaeton and Latin hip-hop highlights of the current scene. On February 1, 1972 born in a wealthy family from the town of Santurce Tego Calderón. Over the years, that child would become one of the most famous reggaeton singers and music of his native country, Puerto Rico. His compositions have achieved considerable success in large part because they show a significant influence of salsa and rhythms characteristic of Antillean music. No doubt that is the result of his great admiration for the idol to generations of Latinos, Ismael Rivera. The racism and life on the street are two of the themes which revolve[..]
Choose An Omega Watch For Olympic Quality...
Bond, James Bond, if those words stir your martini then you knows Omega. The official bond watches were made by Omega. An Omega watch is not only known for its status but also is a masterpiece of perfect time keeping. Omega watches are used in times where precision is of importance and so sports timekeeping is their forte. Omega watches were used as early as 1932 in the Los Angeles games where all the events used an omega timepiece. They invented the first waterproof photoelectric cell as well as the first photo finish camera but undoubtedly their best innovation has been the Omega watch. Since the beginning of the century the Olympic games have been using Omega watches and they have[..]

History of the Wetsuit
Wetsuits are used in a variety of water sports, for preserving and insulating body heat. Hugh Bradner is usually considered as the inventor of the modern day Wetsuit. The History of Wetsuits can not actually pinpoint the person who invented the first wetsuit, however, Bradner was an SIO physicist, and along with UC-Berkeley came up with the idea of using water to keep the body heat warmed. He knew that water was a better heat conductor than air. Originally wetsuits did not have any backing material and one had to be very careful when taking the suit off, as the rubber would stick to their skin. They also were very easily torn. To prevent this from happening divers would use talc powder,[..]
In the retro years bicycle was considered to be the 'Human Powered Vehicle". The bi-cycling scenario bloomed in the end of the 18th century. Then bicycle was considered to be a mere mode of transportation has now come a long way due to stalwarts like Lance Armstrongand his well-renowned triumph at the 'Tour de France'. Thoroughbreds are known as "America's Racing Horse". This breed of horse runs at the race track every single day around the world. History of the Thoroughbred: This breed of horse was originally bred in England due to the English horsemen's desire to have a fast race horse. There are three that founded this bloodline which are: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian, named after their respective owners, Thomas Darley, Lord Godolphin and Captain Robert Byerley. All of these stallions were imported to England from the Mediterranean Middle East between 1670 and 1710. The result was an animal that could carry weight with sustained speeds over extended distances.[..]
Training Your Horse - How Well Does Your Horse...
How well does your horse stop? Does he just slow down and eventually stop? Does he stop at all? The most important thing about training your horse is how to stop. Some argue the most important thing a horse should know is how to move forward. I'll share another one of my horse training tips about this in a minute. In my mind, the stop is the biggie because a good hearty "WHOA" can save your life. Think about it - if your horse isn't very good at stopping then you're just askin' for trouble. Here is a big secret to get you horse to stop: Right AFTER you get your horse to stop, do this... "Back him up a couple steps!" Why? Because the horse quickly fixes in his mind that he won't be[..]
Horse Breaking Part 2
In part 1 I cover some horse breaking techniques that are used in natural horsemanship training when working in a round pen. Now it's time to ride. That's right - you ride before you fit the bridle. All you need is a halter and lead, or you can attach two leads to the halter if you prefer (like reins). This time, bring a mounting block into the round pen, and introduce your horse to it. Saddle up, lean over your horse's back, swing your leg over, and sit up. With some horses, you will be able to do this in one session; with others, it might take several sessions over a few days, with you getting a little farther each time. When you are on board, and your horse is standing quietly,[..]
Tips For Choosing Running Shoes
It seems easy to buy running shoes, right? You probably think that as long as the pair feels comfortable on your feet and does not pinch or rub you the wrong way, then it's the pair for you. But this myth is soon dispelled when you learn the basics of choosing them. The Basics Running shoes are designed to support the feet and ankles. They are designed to cater to different foot types and different pronation styles. Without the support of the right running shoes, runners can be prone to injuries and their gait may not be as efficient. People with fallen arches or flat feet have the tendency to roll their ankles far too inward (pronation) and those with high arches do not have sufficient[..]
Practicing Good Horsemanship - We've Got to...
As part of his education, the horse must learn to "separate" between standing and accepting an item (a coiled rope or perhaps a flag), and then yielding away from that same item. It's our responsibility to help him sort out the difference. Let's take the flag, for example. During the gentling process, we routinely expect the horse to learn to stand and accept being touched, rubbed, and tapped with the flag. Yet, he must also learn to yield away from it. To help him "separate" between the two, we've got to have rhythm! When the taps are random, without the organized pattern that rhythm provides, the tapping lacks meaningful information. Thus, the horse learns to stand and accept the flag.[..]
Riding Hats - How to Find the Right One
In case you never bought a riding hat because you thought it would be uncomfortable, you can now find a variety of riding hats in various colors and sizes. These can be comfortable, attractive, and fit well. Of course, they can provide you with protection against falls and injuries. Please don't make the mistake of thinking you are too experienced to wear a helmet. Accidents happen to experienced riders - even riders with more than two decades of horse-riding experience. Usually, horse-riding hats are made of hard shells designed with materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber and so on. Which materials used depends on the brand you purchase. The hat's size can be found on the inside,[..]
Safer Trail Riding - How to Get Your Horse to...
Nearly every trail ride has at least one rider who is disappointed and frustrated with the experience because their horse insists on jigging, that quick, bouncy, irritating trot that lets everyone around you know that your horse is in charge. Teaching your horse to walk flat and obediently will not only make trail riding more enjoyable, it will make your ride a safer one. The only reason horses jig on the trail is because the majority of their attention is somewhere other than on their rider. What the horse focuses on isn't important. The only way to fix a horse that jigs is to center their brain back on the one in the saddle rather than the surroundings. Training Begins At Home The fix[..]
Cheap Equestrian Clothing Doesn't Have to Be...
All equestrians have their favorite clothes to wear daily for cleaning and exercising and just hanging around the barn. These clothes do not have to stand up to the scrutiny of a judge in the show arena so it goes without saying that you shouldn't have to spend your last winning purse to buy them. It is possible to find affordable equestrian clothing for the show arena as well as for your day to day chores and tasks. Notice the keyword here is affordable because cheap has a bit of a negative connotation that affordable corrects. Cheap in price does not have to mean poor in quality. Many horse owners have had favorite items or "lucky" articles of clothing for decades. These were not hand[..]
Men's Riding Jackets
Whether you are a seasoned equestrian or a casual rider, what you wear makes an impact on your riding, comfort and confidence. While purchasing your riding apparel, be it jackets, breeches or boots, extra care must be exercised. Comfort is the main criterion while buying men's riding jackets. If you are not comfortable in the jacket you wear, it will affect your performance. Another thing to consider while purchasing men's riding jackets is the fitting. More than the appearance of the jacket, it is its fitting on the rider that decides the impression the rider makes on the onlookers. A loose or too-tight jacket can make you look unprofessional and even affects your riding, whereas a[..]

Race Horse Shoeing - The Potential Dangers And...
Race horses are shod with the intent of creating speed. How this is accomplished is by leaving the toes longer than normally is accepted. Why? The extra length of toe creates a lever as the horse drives forward the foot stays on the ground just a fraction of time longer thereby generating more forward thrust resulting in more speed. When the length of the toe is increased it multiplies the leverage necessary to generate speed. This practice of generating speed does not come without cost. The cost is a negative one- bowed tendons and lameness many times permanent lameness and the worst case scenario the destruction of the horse, "putting it down". Too many times we hear race horses are[..]
The canter is a 3 beat movement. The well balanced elevated canter is a beautiful pace to ride. As a rider you feel elegant skilled and wow 'look at me'. This is how it should feel. A rider without balance or stability will interfere with a horses natural rhythm. The horse will tighten his back, raise his head and lean on the bit and "resist". To ride the canter well. A rider needs good lower back flexibility, upper body strength, good endurance and strong deep core stability. The movement of the body is a counter movement to the pelvis. This is why the lower back has to be very flexible and strong. The hamstrings need to keep the impulsion as the hands hold a gentle contact. The riders[..]
Your horse may have learned all the basics of show jumping including the accuracy grace and form that are required in order to complete the different obstacles that are present in the event. But there is one problem that horse owners often face with their horses. The problem is that of an insufficiently high jump. A higher jump ensures that your horse can pass over the more difficult obstacles with ease. Even though grace and fluidity are more important in the Hunter ring a horse, which has inadequate jump height, will often struggle to garner good scores, not to mention often failing to jump obstacles or knocking them down in the process. How, therefore, do you make your horse jump[..]
Beautiful manes and tails are the goal of nearly all horse owners. Getting manes and tails to grow long and lustrous is one issue. Getting them to stay that way is entirely another. The longer and thicker a horse's mane and tail becomes, the more work it takes to keep them groomed and free of mats and witches knots. Witches knots are those annoying masses of knots that seem to breed wildly until there is no way to tell where the knot starts and ends. Hair Care Between Grooming Sessions There are many options for horses that are stalled for most of their day. Any number of tail bags, braiding options, and tail-systems exist on the market. But, be warned; just as there is no perfect[..]
Algae, Rust, Mosquito Larvae - These are all things that can be living in your watering tank. There are a few questions people have asked about watering their horses. Providing adequate and clean water is one of the most important things you can do for your horse. Algae The first is about algae. Actually, algae as well as bugs (like mosquitos) will grow in most water tanks whether the tank is cement, metal, plastic, or rubber. Adding bleach to the tank may keep algae from growing and allow the water to last longer. I would suggest not using bleach. It is too easy to make an error in measuring the bleach - this may cause harm to your animals. A Fish??? Yes, A Fish... Instead of bleach,[..]
Engage Your Horse's Hind Legs
Many riders are confused by the term "engage the hind leg"? They want to know exactly what engagement means and how to go about achieving it. So here's some food for thought about engagement. Engagement simply means the bending (or the folding) of the joints of the hind leg. What follows are examples of asking for different degrees of engagement. 1. Start with baby engagement of the hind legs with the 3-second combination of aids that I call "the connecting aids" or "the connecting half halt". Connecting your horse will engage his hind legs to a degree because you're asking him to bring his hind legs underneath his body and come on the bit. BUT, those aids shouldn't be harsh. If your[..]
10 Steps to Regaining Your Confidence in the...
Anyone who has been riding for any length of time has fallen or been bucked off their horse - more than once. The standard advice is that you must pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on right away. But sometimes, that is not possible nor is it necessarily the best thing to do. No matter how long you have been riding, a fall can cause your confidence to be shaken so much that fear creeps in, takes a hold, and begins to affect your riding. Some people continue to ride, but are nervous every time. Others hide their fear behind bravado and become angry or aggressive riders taking the "I'll get him before he gets me" attitude. Others find reasons to not ride - they have no[..]
A feature that makes riding with mecate-style reins so handy is that--once you know how to correctly tie up the reins around the horse's neck--the mecate lead itself can then be safely used to tie up the horse. Each time before tying, however, three key concerns should always be addressed: - The type of mecate being used. - The place the horse will be tied. - The experience level of the horse. Type of Mecate - What is your mecate made of? If your mecate reins are constructed of parachute cord, yacht braid, treeline or some other type of synthetic rope, you can safely tie with your mecate lead. A hair mecate, on the other hand, is a different story. As skilled rope maker Sara Hagel of[..]
At Aqueduct it became obvious this year's Kentucky Derby is Todd Pletcher's to lose. At Santa Anita Sidney's Candy wired 'em by 4 plus in their Derby amid controvery. The question being posed? Will Bob Baffert take Garrett Gomez off Lookin At Lucky for his horrible ride? Eskendereya answered the doubters with a blowout 9-3/4 length blowout in the Wood Memorial in New York. It appears after the dust had cleared Saturday the only thing that can stop Eskendereya is Pletcher's long running failure to win in Louisville. Saturday in New York Eskendereya had quality finishing up in his wake. Awesome Act, a colt who appeared ready to move to the next level, failed to offer a serious threat. He[..]
Fitting a Horse Rug Correctly - How and Why
It is necessary when buying and using your outdoor rugs to bear the following points in mind. Fit is all-important. Rugs are usually sized in three-inch increments. The measurement refers to the centre of the chest of the horse along the body to the rear of the quarters where you expect the rug to finish. As horses of any given size vary so much in girth and build, it is essential to take these measurements before purchasing your rug. A rug will not stay in place unless it fits properly. A badly fitted rug will slip and be strained to breaking point. Horses come in a variety of shapes and sizes. If a horse is exceptionally broad in the back it may be necessary to buy the next size up in[..]
Wild horses are sophisticated and intelligent social beings. A horse that grew up in a wild herd, learn manners, cooperation, respect, and a profound understanding of movement and body language. Fear is the only thing that stands between them and a lifelong bond with the owner. Earning a wild horse's trust will take time and patience. But once you have earned the horse's trust, they are now ready to be trained just like any other domesticated horse. Similar to any horse; the better the training, the better the horse. The following are some of the steps on how to train a wild horse:a. The first thing you should do is gain the horse's trust. You can't work with a horse that doesn't trust[..]
What can happen when a rider is NOT fit for equestrian sports. As nearly all equestrians know, horses mimic in their bodies what takes place in the rider's body. So, if a rider is not physically fit, they cannot expect their mount to perform at his highest potential. Stiffness and rigidity in the rider's body can translate to stiffness in the horse's body. So, the rider may think that their mount is being stubborn or disobedient, when in actuality, the horse is being held back by the rider's own inadequacies. That may be a hard pill to swallow for those who are not in good physical condition. It was a hard realization that I had just recently. I read a book by Betsy Steiner which has a[..]
How Do I Get a Good Free Walk?
1. What is the free walk? The free walk is a gait of relaxation. 2. What should it look like? * Your horse should lengthen his frame and lower his head and neck so he looks like he's going to graze. His poll is lower than his withers. * He should open the angle at his throatlatch so his nose points a bit forward, and he looks like he's stretching toward the bit. * His strides become longer so he overtracks to a greater degree. 3. How should you do the transition at the beginning of the free walk? PREPARATION is the key to getting a good free walk. You should prepare for it the same way you prepare for the "stretchy" circle in the trot. * Use a "connecting half halt" for 3-4 seconds on[..]
When To Count Strides While Jumping
I have often been asked by my students when they should count strides? The first thing I tell them is that stride counting is a very useful tool, and when used correctly can make a course of jumps far easier to negotiate than without counting. The general rule of thumb that I use with my students is to count strides in any related line of eight strides or less. Most hunter/ jumper courses have several of this length line within their parameters. Hunter courses usually contain two or three related distances that require counting, the course designer should post footage between their lines. Sometimes an outside course in a huge jump field will have longer lines that need to be counted, but[..]
Softening Exercises For Schooling Horses on...
Whether green or well schooled, many horses will lay in the rider's hands instead of taking true contact. Some may do so as a form of resistance or greenness; whereas, others may be traveling on the forehand, sore, accustomed to pulling the reins from the rider's hands, off the track or are unable or resistant of performing self carriage. For horses that need a little help in learning how to stay soft and carry themselves, a few easy exercises are suggested below. All exercises are performed first at the walk, then trot and later, when you and your horse are ready, at the canter. Ensure that your horse is moving forward freely at all gaits. First, warm your horse up on a long rein.[..]

Correct Position For Jumping and Building...
The two point position, also known as the jumping position or forward or half seat, is a foundation position for the rider in any type of jumping activity. The two point position is really very aptly named as the position includes the rider having only two points of contact with the horse. These two points are the legs on either side of the saddle, with the rest of the rider's body positioned in a balanced, central position to slightly forward position over the back of the horse. This specific position prevents any pressure on the horse's back which may inhibit or restrict the ability of the horse to launch, complete and land the jump. The key to learning a good two point position is to[..]
A few hundred years ago, the Przewalski horse ran wild in Mongolia. Although these horses were native to their Mongolian home range, it is thought they roamed throughout Europe and most of Asia. This is evident from the cave paintings that have been discovered and studied in France and Spain. The Przewalski horse only exists now in Zoos and private reserves. A little over one hundred years ago, Colonel Nikolai Przewalski under orders of the Czar, made several voyages into Mongolia and discovered the remnants of this horse. The horse was named after him as he was credited with the discovery. The Prezewalski horse is a short and very stout horse. They generally stand approximately 12[..]
An Injury Like This Would Put A Football Player...
You probably watched at least part of the Super Bowl a few Sundays ago. Most people did. And if you enjoy watching football as much as I do, you've probably seen more than one player go down with some kind of head injury. It just comes with the territory. Problem is, it comes with your horse's territory, too. As gregarious as horses can be, they are definitely susceptible to head injuries. But can they really be life-threatening? It's scary enough to see a horse with a head injury. It's even worse to have watched it happen. I've seen them rear so high they fall backwards. That's scary. Sometimes a horse may haul off and kick his paddock mates in the face in an effort to achieve the rank[..]

Horse Blanket Basics
There are several different types of blankets that can be important additions to your tack room and definitely can help your horse in staying comfortable in all types of weather conditions. Blankets will vary in both weight and materials, depending on where and how they are to be used. Since putting a blanket on a horse can really help in keeping them warm, helping them to cool down slowly or even in keeping pesky flies away, it is a good idea to have several different blankets available to meet your horse's needs. The most common type of blanket is the stable blanket. These can be either a heavy or lightweight fabric and are typically a cotton or cotton blend material and may be quilted[..]
