Many riders struggle with horses who don't understand contact with their hands. Some like to resist and go above the bit. Others evade contact by curling, diving under, and/or ducking behind the bit. For the horse that goes behind the bit, I've found that the best way to encourage a horse to take a contact with my hands is to teach him to go "forward through his body". Here's the basic process: 1. Go on a circle in rising trot. 2. Close both legs and do "his version" of a lengthening for a few strides. I say "his version" because he might actually end up running rather than lengthening. It doesn't matter. He just has to give you some sort of forward reaction. 3. Do that several times.[..]

This is called breaking the barrier, a rope tied around the steer's neck and across the header's box. The roper on the left side of the steer will rope the steer's horns and turn at a right angle to the left. After making the turn, the heeler will come in to rope both hind feet. If a cow herd varies greatly in size and conformation, so will your calves. Likewise, the nutritional needs of many cows will not be met. The trot is a two-beat gait, with the horses' diagonal legs striking the ground at the same time. The canter is a three beat gait with one hind leg hitting the ground, followed by two diagonal legs and ending with a front leg. In the last article, I discussed using benign antagonism to make your horse's soft side more "stiff" and his stiff side more "soft" and bendable. Your horse's weaker hind leg is the leg on his soft side. There's nothing wrong with your horse! Almost every horse has a weaker hind leg because few horses are ambidextrous. The weaker leg is the one on your horse's "soft" or hollow side. The stronger one is on his stiff side. The weak hind leg doesn't step directly underneath your horse's body. It is very hard to detect the severity or progression of tendon damage by visually examining or palpating the limb, ultrasound will be necessary to determine this. Veterinary involvement becomes necessary in more acute cases. Phenylbutazone is a popular choice for initial nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID's) therapy and does not affect the natural repair process. Corticosteroids are also used to decrease inflammation, oedema and adhesions between the tendon and sheath. It has been shown that the use of steroids for the treatment of tendon damage could cause a negative effect. Injection into the tendon has been shown to cause collagen fibre necrosis, fibrocyte death and dystrophic[..]
